Irish Setter
The Irish Setter is a gentle and intelligent dog who is very attached to his family and has inexhaustible energy, which makes him restless and sometimes nervous. Because they are very friendly, they are not good watchdogs, although they will announce the presence of a visitor. The Irish Setter remains very playful throughout its life - one of its most endearing qualities.
The Irish Setter is the oldest of the setter group, preceding the Setter Gordons and the English Setter. The breed is thought to be the result of crosses between old spaniels, setter spaniels and Scottish Setters. In 1882, the Irish Red Setter Club was founded in Dublin, inspired by the breeding programme of the Earl of Enniskillen, who developed the distinctive solid red coat. In the 1940s, the breed was almost extinct due to progressive retinal atrophy, better known as APR. Through the development of a DNA test to identify the species or strain of the infectious agent, the breed recovered and the occurrence of APR decreased dramatically.
