Pointer
Pointers are very popular working dogs. As pets, they are friendly and affectionate, enjoying socialising with other dogs and domestic pets. They like to take part in all family programmes. They are not ideal guard dogs in the presence of strangers, because everyone is welcome, but they do announce the presence of visitors.
The origin of the Pointer dog breed is controversial: it is not known whether they descend from Spanish Pointers or Continental Pointers. What is certain is that the English Pointer dates back to the 17th century and is a breed native to the British Isles, being used as "pointers" for hunting. These primitive dogs worked with greyhounds in hare coursing. The Pointer acted as a pointer in hare coursing and the greyhounds caught and brought in the prey. At the beginning of the 18th century, bird hunting became popular and it was here that their true abilities came to the fore. To this day, Pointers are exceptional hunting dogs.
